Everybody should be required to ride a bike for 2 years before they get in their bloated cars and proceed to pretend to be a safe driver. People remove their mufflers basically to get attention. Car freaks do it too. Of course their is a noticeable increase in power as a bonus. Quick answer....They are petrol heads.

The saying "loud pipes save lives" is both true and false... depends on how you look at it. Most do it just to draw attention to them, nothing more. Personally the loud pipes give me a dam head ache! Besides, when I'm going balls-out at 210 mph, the last thing I want is for the cops to hear me coming from 5 miles away!

I replaced the slipons on my Harley with more open slipons and did a couple of other modifications in order to get a little more horse power and speed at the cost of some mileage (went from 50mpg to about 46mpg). But that's because the bike isn't really built to be a fast bike.
I haven't and won't replace the slip-ons on my Hayabusa because it's plenty fast enough and my mileage at 52mpg is worth keeping it stock.

The bike's not fast enough for them and the cost of getting a bigger bike (both in value and insurance) is a lot more than the couple hundred for replacement slip-ons.

The police are catching on though. There are federal environment laws that are being broken when you replace your pipes. If the mufflers don't have the EPA stampings on it, they're not legal for the street and you can get a pretty hefty fine. An article I read had it at $2,500 but I haven't found an official source yet.

It's called the tool factor they actually think a straight exhaust make power it may help at wide open throttle but it sucks everywhere else in the rpms. You must be talking about the harley tools. and todays sport bikes may only get 5 hp from a full exhaust system. most change there pipe for a weight saving and a little better sound. And 200 mph tool you cant even spell 200 mph let alone have seen it on your speedoIt is to make people whine like little girls and ask stupid questions,,,seems to be working..
