Question:
i have a 1100 v-star, i just put straight pipes on it. will i burn up my exhaust valves or is it just a myth?

Answers:
It's not straight pipes that would "burn valves" or damage your motor, it is the lean condition that can result from changing exhaust systems.
Be sure you properly re-jet your carb or re-map your processor and you'll be fine.
And yes , changing exhaust will change your power band, that's usually why people do it.

You need to rejet your carb to match your pipes. Most of the aftermarket pipes I've ever installed came with jetting suggestions or the suggested jets themselves.

In detail what is the process to install a cylinder sleeve in a 2 stroke bike engine?
it can suck cold air and warp a valve then causing it not to set properly causing gas to burn the valve. it happened to me on a four wheeler. Causing about $380 worth of work. When is unicorn upgraded version going to be released?
I'm not sure about the V-star, is it fuel injected or carbeurated? If it has carbs then they need to be rejetted a bit richer to compensate for the faster flowing exhaust. You need to do that to get the best of the mod anyhow. I'm not sure about burnt valves, but I do know you can melt a hole in a piston from running too lean, been there and done that. BTW, fuel injection should be able to compensate, but I'd have a dealer check to be sure.Who would like to see Harley get rid of the dunflops ?
I have been running straight pipes for six years and had no problems.Motorcycle Tour to Switzerland in June.....?
Straight pipes or "drag pipes" won't burn your valves unless you grossly misinterpret the re-jetting of the carb and then burning a hole in a piston is more of a possibility than burning a valve, but you get almost NO benefit from drag pipes unless you are drag racing. You've actually lost HP installing them. Without going into too much detail...any engine, especially a v-twin, requires a certain amount of back pressure in the exhaust system to run the best in a "streetable" condition (all RPM ranges). Install a quality exhaust system, you'll gain back the HP you've lost and then some...Is there a Kelley Blue Book type of site for motorcycles?
u either have to do a rejet on a carb bike, or have the ecm recalibrated. straight pipes are for high rpm applications, some place the typical street rider never sees even when crackin on the gas to merge on the interstate. the typical bike will actually lose horsepower.if u dont reset the mix, u will be running too lean. engine damage can result. its ur bike, do what u want, but if u want to save the engine, get the ecm properly recalibrated.
Start up scooter squeling noise what is this please?
you need back-pressure, without that you could smoke somethg..easiestway, drill a 1/4 inch hole in each pipe,
whr? divide the straight part of your pipes [no bends] in 1/3s. frm the back
at the end of the 1st 3rd, drill...make it about 10 o'clock, make bolt length
short so it dont rattle...tac-weld, or silicone. this will tone your pipes dn 10%or so, but save your motor too!
believe me, its alot easier to do that...

Battery problems. Help please?
The same volume of exhaust moves past the exhaust valves at the same temperature whether you have sound deadening or straight pipes. Back-pressure created by sound deadening devices does not contribute to a cooler anything. In other words, it's a myth.

Yes and no.Some tips to be a good motorcyle racer??
Most of the current aftermarket 'straight pipes' do have some restriction in them. Usually enough to create the backpressure needed to keep the exhaust pulses moving the right direction.
What kinda MPG should I be getting?
If it's something that you've modified yourself, and they are very short (stop before the footpeg mount, etc), then it could be an issue.
If you have a fuel injected model, and it has a pyrometer or something similar in the exhaust side of the head, this can actually mess up the reading - so all EFI models aren't bullet-proof when it comes to tuning a straight-through exhaust.
Carbureted models will need to be jetted accordingly - not necessarily richer, if jetting was correct with a good exhaust system and you've switched to open pipes, then you may actually need to lean out the pilot and/or needle circuit.

Bottom line - are straight pipes 'good' for an engine? In most cases (without other radical modifications), not really. Will they hurt an engine? In most cases, not much, or not at all. Are they the best way to make power? Not usually.
Is my motorbike license still valid?
The sole purpose of an exhaust system is to dissipate the heat away from the valves. So in theory, the answer is no.The part about making the engine quieter is purely bureaucratic, and has no bearing.
no myth here man. all you need is to rejet it and your all good

my personal experience is yes you would be ahead to enrichen your main jet if fuel injected get it mapped , if carb, dont spend $40.00 to $70.00 on a jet kit unless you are going to drag race on a continual basis go to your local bike shop buy a larger jet and a couple needle shims , also dont know what kind of pipes you put on but caution to cold weather riding with out Baffles it can cause a bent valve , another note of personal experienceMore Questions & Answers ...
