best place to start is the beginners riders course offered by your local comunity college. A bike will only go as fast as you want it to go so dont be intimidated by size. most are also adjustable to your body size and frame so dont worry about that either. Most important is learning to ride properly!Skip the Hardley Davidson .... too expensive for a starter bike. Take a look at Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki's web sites. New or used? I 'd go for a good used bike first.

I ride an Aprilia Atlantic 500. It's a maxi-scooter and a ton of fun. I ride with my little "gang". They all ride Harleys (which are so overrated) and make fun of me, but who's hands and backs hurt at the end of the day? Yeah, not mine. :-) Anyway, whatever you decide, make sure you have fun!

Easy to learn on because it has smooth power, you can get a really low seat for it which you may need, when, not if, you fall over with it the parts may be found used and don't cost a fortune, get a used one and learn on it. If you like riding after a year or so sell it and get something better.

I got my first bike in July. It's an '05 Yamaha V-Star 650. I'm 5'6" and it's a great size bike for me, however the girlfriend I ride with is 5'2" and it is low enough and centered enough for her to balance and flat-foot as well.There are MANY types of bikes, but I'm very happy with this one.
