If the bike isn't fuel injected, then the main fuel line takes gas from higher up inside the tank. Once the fuel goes below that point, the bike will sputter and lose power since it can't get fuel into the carburetor.
Which of these 2 motorcycles is the best Choice for a rookie rider?
The petcock is a twist valve under the tank that switches from the higher fuel line to one at the bottom of the tank. When you do this, you are now on "reserve" fuel and should get to a gas station to fill up.
Basically, it's a manual way to know if you are low on fuel. One mistake to never do is to leave the petcock on "reserve" after filling up. If you do and run out of gas, then you're walking!

So ride 'till it sputters, turn the petcock to reserve, hit the next gas station, and turn the petcock back to "on" when filling up.
