which bike engine are more complicated & more durable? 2 stroke or 4 stroke? are there such thing as 1000cc 2 stroke sportbike?

So the 4 stroke has less power strokes so it uses less fuel than the 2 stroke.
But the 2 stroke engine fires more than the 4 stroke, so it will be more responisve and in the initial rpm range you will fell more powerful and will feel that the engine is more responsive.

The 4 stroke has more parts and will continue to be allowed for a while, but the environmental people have stopped the sales of 2 stroke-rs because of oil gas mix pollution.
Another thing, the 2 cycles wear out faster since they fire on every stroke. And most have no cast iron sleeve, just hard aluminum.

You asked a very broad question. The four strokes are more complicated in theory because they have more moving parts, however two strokes are not widely understood by most people. Almost every one who has owned a 2-cycle dirt has rebuilt it at least once, but most of these people don't understand the dynamics of fine tuning the engine, port timing, port height, positive pressure under the piston, timing retard not advance at high rpms. So though the 2-stroke has fewer moving parts I feel it is the more complex engine over all. No body makes 1000cc 2-cycle street bikes, but a 500cc v-4 two stroke will waste any thing! I could go on for ever but I am sure I'll only start to confuse people.

I have to add that the guy who answered below me sounds intelligent but is in fact wrong to a degree, a single cylinder 2-stroke fires ONCE every revolution a Single cylinder 4-stroke fires once every other revolution! It sounds like he mixed up strokes with revolutions

two strokes can be reliable but are no longer made. kawasaki made a 750 2 stroke back in the early seventies that would destroy just about anthing out there. in grand prix racing 2 strokes ruled for decades infact a 350cc yamaha won daytona against 750 4 strokes in the seventies. just recently 4 strokes have taken over gp racing but to compete against the 500cc gp bikes the first year they were allowed to be 1000cc. - back in the 60s saab made a 3 cylinder two stroke car that was very reliable but the epa killed it
