Question:
I purchased a Honda CB550 ('76) last week and have really been enjoying getting into the swing of riding it. The previous owner, and good friend of mine, told me that the carbs should be rejetted (there is some oil in the mix that causes a bit of smoking.) Also the bike idles pretty choppy and it seems like it's not getting quite enough fuel. I have read online and seen that I could replace the carbs, rejet them at a shop (or on my own?), replace/ check the fuel filter, etc. What route should I consider going on such an old bike?

Rejetting a carburetor isn't really that hard. I did it last winter without any other experience working with them and it was pretty simple to follow the directions. The hardest part was actually getting the carburetor out.I would suggest trying it on your own. If you get in a pinch, it is cheaper and easier to walk in and hand a mechanic your carb than bring the whole bike in.
Once you get inside the carb, it may be that it doesn't need a full rebuild at all - it might just be dirty and need a good cleaning. If anyone left gas sitting in the carb for any length of time during the bike's 30 year life, varnish could have started to build up.
Anybody know where I can get a front axle holder/clamp for a BMW F650 - New or second hand?
Also, oil wouldn't be getting in through the carburetor.only air and gasoline enter there. If you're burning oil you might have a head gasket in the engine that needs replacing.
Does anyone know a site that has SUPPPERRR CHEAPPP mini bikes for sale?
You might just need a carb sync if fuel is getting into the intake ok. First just try replacing plugs, wires, and adjust the idle. Often an Italian tune-up will clean out those puppies. Try that first before messing with anything on the carbs.Ever heard of dynojet power commander?
If you do need to rebuild, get a rebuild kit and replace the gaskets, jets, and maybe the floats. You can find all this stuff on-line. Get a shop manual to help you. It's not that hard if you stay organized and don't lose any screws. Document dis-assembly stages with a digital camera. I got rebuild kits for my 76 CB400F on-line. I doubt you will be able to replace the carbs. They are hard to find.

p.s. If some oil is getting into the carbs, it is coming from the failure of a rotted blow-back sponge in the air-cleaner assembly (under the air filter). Put in a new sponge (you can just cut one to size from a kitchen sponge).
