i am coming back to blighty at the end of march and want to travel on the train... from grantham to london on the 8th april it takes 3 and a half hours for a journey that usually only takes one... what's that all about?

April the 8th is Easter Sunday. As you say, a journey to Grantham on that day will taken nearly 3 hours. One on-line rail site I checked wouldn't even give me any times for the journey on that day. But I was able to find out via national rail enquiries that the lengthy journey time is the result of engineering works which often take place over public holidays. Your journey would be from King's Cross Thameslink to Luton, about 45 mins, then bus Luton to Stevenage, 30 mins, then train Stevenage to Grantham, 50 mins total time 2.40
