Getting into first class?

ok, if you are a child, aged 15, are on a virgin train, birmingham to manchester, have a suitcase and it's rush hour and there are no seats, is that a viable reason to ask the attendant to go into first class?? any other ways to blag your way into first class in a situation like this?

It has long been the rule that lack of seats in Standard Class do NOT entitle you to a free upgrade to 1st Class. It's been tried by many before you and they have all failed. The only way to get an upgrade is at weekends when there are cheap offers as there are few business travellers.

Nope, and believe me, I've tried. I was taking the train from Watford to Manchester with my parents. We're from America, and were attending a wedding in Manchester, so between the three of us, we had 5 suitcases. We accidentally boarded in the first class carriage, and the crew told us that it would cost us something like 400 pounds to upgrade, and if we could not pay, we would have to go into the economy carriage to find seats. Half an hour of walking down the train later, we finally found some, and (compared to the trains here) the seats were really nice, and very comfortable. It's not worth the aggravation, just sit in the seat you booked.

No. Because you paid for the services of second class and therefore you cannot go into first class if you don't pay a supplement. However that would be if your Virgin Train conductors were completely sadistic (most conductors here in Switzerland are). Some attendants may allow you to go into first class temporarily, until second frees up. However this would be in breach of company rules and so I doubt any conductors would allow you in 1st class,
