Not all lines in the Netherlands have right-hand running. In Den Helder there is left-hand running because of land problems: the arrival platform has to be full length because alighting passengers can be anywhere on the train, whereas departing passengers can be waiting on a one-coach-length platform. At Roosendaal and Maastricht there is left-hand running because of the Belgian trains which terminate at those stations. Utrecht is another exception because of the track layout for trains which reverse there. Many tracks in the Netherlands are now signalled for two-way running under the Modernisation plan where there will be only 12 "signalboxes" for the whole country.
