The date that the Great Western Railway was formed as a company (The Bristol Railway ) was 1833, and consisted of 118 miles. the actual building started in 1836. Brunel also designed the Bristol-Exeter railway which linked with the GWR at (you guessed) Bristol Temple Meads and also the South Devon Railway which carried the Broad Guage all the way to the end of England.
