fish plates are used to connect rails along the length, this will maintain contunity of the return conductor. because only one conductor supplies power through over head line, the return path for the current from motors is through rails which are earthed at regular intervals. fish plates thus connect one rail with another. they are also important as rails expand during summer and contract during winter, a small gap is maintained and it is adjusted accordingly.
