I believe it's called an estate car because it's the kind of car you need on an estate, to move supplies or large numbers of people or even small livestock. Which is also the reason it's called a station wagon here in the US, because it replaced actual wagons on ranches and such. When your backyard is 400 acres, you prefer a motor vehicle to get around it. I have an idea that the headquarters of a big ranch is or was often called a station, but that may not be true. I'm sure wikipedia has much more definitive answers!
