Do deer whistles you attach to your car work?

Wal-Mart suckered me into buying some deer whistles for my car. They are supposed to emit a sound that will warn deer that I'm coming. Do these things really work?

I live in Michigan where the deer nearly out-number people and I've used deer whistles for years. The idea behind the whistle is that at about 35 mph the air flows through it and causes a high frequency sound, inaudible to humans. When a deer hears it, it will freeze in it's tracks for a moment and look in the direction that the sound is coming from. At night, if the deer is near the road, the car's headlights will reflect from the deer's eyes. This will give the motorist some added time to react before the deer steps into the road. Deer whistles don't scare the animal, they just get it's attention. The whistles also seem to work on other animals, too.

Yes, they work. The noise annoys the deer and causes them to freeze and NOT to run out in front of your vehicle. If you are going to fast though, the wind goes through them to fast for them to make the noise. Also if the deer is already in the road, it will freeze right there.

Yes they do work, they saved my car and my bike several times.
The biggest issue is location to mount them, the more of an opening behind them (such as on the mirror or roof) the better the sound will transmit and alert the animals.
