I live in Canada. Here, when you parallel park on a test you have 3 chances to succeed at it.
First, Park your car along a curb no more than 18 inches away from it.
Then put a couple of milk jugs with water in them (to keep them from tipping over) behind your rear bumper at each side of your car (curb and roadside). Next place a long stick or pole in each jug so you can see it while in the driver's seat.
Then pace off your car along the driver's side...count the steps from the rear to the front of your car. Okay, now take another half of that in steps forward (say, 6 paces for your car and another 3). Now, place another water filled jug at this spot. Then pace off another 6 paces or so in front of that ( to provide a phantom car) and place another jug there and put long sticks or poles in these too.
Now you have a set-up to practice. Where your car was, now becomes your "parking space".
You signal left, shoulder check and pull out along side of this phantom car about 3 feet from it and paralllel to it. Find the "rear bumper" of this phantom car in the bottom right corner of your rear door window, and signal right of course. Begin to move in reverse for half a second and then turn full right so your vehicle backs in toward the curb and look back most of the time while you do this. Once you can see the rear bumper of this "phantom car" (the stick) in the corner of your front passenger door window while you lean forward looking right, then you continue moving slowly, always covering your brake and straighten out the wheels. When you can see the same rear bumper of this "phantom car" in the right hand corner of your windshield then continue moving very slowly and steer full left to bring the rear of your car around and along the curb. You can check in your righthand mirror to see when you are straight and "parallel" and close enough.
Then straighten your wheels again to the right placing your vehicle in the center of the poles in front and behind you. You should also look mostly to the rear while doing this exercise because it's a test to check your backing skills.
You'll also find instructions in your Instruction Manual.
You'll have to practice a lot, but it will eventually work for you...another thing..you have to take into consideration the width of the car in front of you in comparison to yours, and also the distance it is from the curb, so you can make adjustments (when actually parking with real cars after you get your licence).
Good luck
