Question:
ok, so i'm driving down the street.
and this is what i do.
if i see a red light, say 500 to 800 in front of me, i take my foot off the gas pedal.
cars behind me immediately swerve in the other lane, and race to the red line. then they (of course) stop the car, a little abruptly (sometimes a lot abruptly). and here i am, not using the break pedal, just going slowly (cause the light is red anyway), and then most of the time, by the time i get to the light, it has turned green and i'm even infront of the looser who rushed only to stop minutes later.
With all the accidents on the road today.?
my question is, what is the purpose of flooring it, or going fast, only to stop at a red light. and why do people honk behind me to go faster? why would I go faster only to stop soon? of course, i drive normal (even fast a bit), when i see that the light is green.

what's up with that?

Hi I agree with most of the other answers but just want to make a point about your first question. How does speed camera works? Is average speed camera the same as speed camera?
If you were following me in traffic and all of a sudden my car slowed down and you didn't see brake lights--would you think my car had stalled or what? I mean, I'm thinking that's probably why the other drivers swerve into the other lane. The driver behind you was probably following you with adequate car lengths (or not?) between you two and then all of a sudden you slow down--without the warning of brake lights -- get my drift? I'd guess that's where some of the horn blasting might be coming from.
but yeah otherwise, it's the same all over, hurry up and race to the red light. but if everyone drove constantly--not "even fast a bit" when the light is green, there wouldn't be this madness on the streets.

i've often wondered the same thing myself. I am usually not in a big hurry when im driving either, but it seems to me that people, mostly in good ol' america, love to hurry up and wait. Like it changes how long you will have to wait, hmm oh well. my friend described something else as simplified complexity, everything is made easier by tools, and soon you have to be an expert to do the things that were supposed to be made easier. It's a problem with alot of people, but what can you do?Will the Graco (Pooh) baby car seat fit in a super-cab ford f-150 4 door?(not Crew/quad cab)?
There's nothing wrong with what you are doing... this happens to me a lot too. Since I drive a manual transmission, my car can be slowing without braking, and I have idiots pass me on the right or left, only to slam on their brakes when they get to the light. Maybe they are "running late" (a euphemism for "can't manage to leave on time") or they are just impatient. Or they don't mind paying big bucks for brake replacements. Are smoked tail lights legal in the state of California?
Different people have different driving styles - and different living styles for that matter :-). And act of driving serves many other puposes but mere transportation for a lot of people.
