Setting the car to coast at a specifc speed on the highway?

obviously for the same reason bulbs in your house dont blow all at once, even though they are in the same light fixture. No two things are exactly alike. That light bulb has a wire inside it that electricity runs throug and heats up white hot. it's burning the wire, and the vacuum of the bulb prevents much of the combustion from taking place all at once. each bulb has it's own slight manufacturing differences, different vacuums, different level of shock recieved while driving, etc. It's not uncommon to have one bulb last twice as long as the other, and it's also not uncommon to have both burn out within 2 hours. Luck of the draw.

Chalk it up to Murphy"s law.

How do you drive safely at night?

No, Murphy's law would state that both lights would go out at the same time, in the middle of the night, while it was raining, right before you pass by a cop! I have often wondered this same question myself though. My guess would be one of two things, it is either a safety feature built into the car or headlights so that when one light blows you have the chance to replace both (you are supposed to replace both lights at the same time per manufacturers recommendations) before you are left in the above situation. Or it's a money ploy, seeing as you are supposed to replace both lights and you are changing what appears to be a perfectly good bulb just because one blew. I must say though, I have had both headlights blow at the same time on my Rav.
