yeah when in a storm it is safer to be behind a semi cuz their big tires clear the way for you so you have a very small chance of hydroplaning.

For years I have stayed behind Tractor Trailers for wind break. It is safe as long as you are safe about it. Do not get so close that you cannot see the drivers mirror on the truck from your car. If you can see the drivers mirror, better chance that they can see you. It is a courtesy as well as safety practice.
The truckers know when you are drafting them, this is a given, but let them know what your intentions are by staying in their view and not in a blind spot.
