Driving School?

My daughter is almost 20 and is hesitant about driving. She drives, but still needs help on exit ramps, multi lane changing, and double turns. Have any of you been to driving school and how helpful was it to you?

I teach driver's ED here in Owings Mills (part-time). I take my students out early on Sunday's when the roads are NOT over-crowded with other vehicles. I take the following steps:

Before anything, I drive into the highway explaining what I'm doing and why (both at entering and exiting). Then I switch seats and let them do it reminding them of all the steps:

1- Explain what an "entry ramp" is: it's an acceleration lane used to gain the momentum to enter traffic at the appropriate speed.

2- I tell the student to make good use of the ramp and to make goals; half way in the ramp, reach 45 miles per hour, where the solid white line starts be at 55miles per hour. Once the limit is reached, put left blinker on and start looking for space to do a "proper" and "simple" lane change.

Remember, since it's Sunday, it's less likely there is traffic on the road where she'll have to "fight" for a space.

To exit:
1- Explain what an "exit" ramp is: it's a deceleration lane where space is given to you to reduce speed. Each ramp has an advisory sign (it's yellow) with a speed limit. That's the goal to reach about 4 to 5 seconds after the sign (about 100 to 200 feet).

Why can we make a right turn on a red light? Other countries don't have that law. Plus I think its not safe..

I loop around an expressway with a student about eight times. The object is to get the student familiar with the tasks. Once they know what to do and how to do it, it's less threatening in traffic.

More practice..........yes, driving school helps..............you get more practice and they teach you how to relax a bit.
