Question:
...the only ones I've found are over $250. There's the Britax models. Waaaay overpriced. Then there's the Radian 65 for about $200. She's only 2, or I'd go with the Alpha Elite Apex, but that's for 4 years and up. I know I sound cheap, but I'm not...I'm willing to pay the $299 for the top of the line...however, I'm not the only one making the decision and my husband is more frugal, thinking the 40 lb ones are just fine, and then moving them to the belt positioning booster will be fine at that weight. Grr. Anyway, any idea if there's one out there for less than $200? I'm talking about the 5-point harness btw when talking about weight. Belt positioning can go up to 100 lbs, but the 5-point harness usually is 40, 65, or with the Radian 80 it's 80 lbs.
Answers:
The Fisher Price Safe Voyage (about $180) is built upon the Britax Marathon platform but only goes to 55 pounds.
The Radian 80 is just a Radian 65 with a higher weight limit - the harness slots are not any higher so it will be a rare child that will make it to 80lbs in the Radian80 - most children would outgrow the seat by height long before 80 pounds. The Radian65 also rear faces to 33 pounds and can be tethered rear facing. The Radian 65 might be a good fit for your child but it is important to note that it is difficult if not impossible to properly install the Radian in many vehicles. It is definitely a try before you buy seat.
How do I describe a problem / request service in transportation?
The Apex65 is about $130 and goes to 65 pounds harnessed and 100 pounds as a belt positioning booster. The downfall with the Apex is that you MUST have high seat backs or headrests for this seat. Some people complain about this seat feeling flimsy.
Have we gone to far with political correctness?
The Britax Marathon can often be found online for closer to $230 with free shipping. The Marathon will allow your DD (if possible) to rear face until 33 pounds, can be tethered rear facing, forward facing until 65 pounds and is a universally easy install.
