Not only is the glass carried on the outside of the van, but it's also beyond the normal profile of the vehicle. You wonder why they are allowed to do this. What d'you reckon?
Answers:
Does anyone know why would my trailors electic breaks would lock as soon as I was in motion?
I think it is ridiculous to carry glass on the out side of vehicles especially as the frame that carries it sticks out about 18 inches from the side of the vehicle. Just about right for a cyclist or motorcyclist to run into.I think it's no more dangerous than any other vehicle out there, and there are bigger behicles on the road than a glass van, with larger profiles.
I think having it on the ouside allows for larger panes to be transported easily, as well as moving them to and from the van to the place of installation.

Its a lot less dangerous than carrying around 50 litres of highly flammable liquid in a plastic tank underneath the rear seat of a car, but most drivers do so without giving it a second thought.(In case you are wondering, the fuel tank of many modern cars is plastic, and located underneath the rear seat, and petrol is highly flammable).
i work in the glass industry the answer is some glass is far to big to be carried inside also when being unloaded it has to be craned off or man handled ,some vehicle's do have curtains to protect the glass but that is the major merchants and i might be wrong but a stipulation in london only
