Question:
I have seen numerous lorries and car transporters with horrendous overhangs and protrusions which would easily decapitate anyone unfortunate enough to drive into the back of them.
Are there any rules relating to crash impact protection or safety barriers to prevent such occurences.
What is the longest you have ever waited at a stoplight?
I think there are rules regarding the front end, with respect to pedestrian safety (minimum diameters for edges etc..) but i am unaware of any similar regulations for the rear.
Answers:
Do you think that buses should have seat belts? See the article below about the GA bus crash.?
There has to be a crash bar around the back and sides of a lorry that has to be set at a certain height. The height should be about 24" from the ground. If the rear of the lorry is lower than this already,it does not need crash bars as a car should not be able to go underneath. There are rules on the size of the Overhang, and the 'under-run' protection that should be provided by a trailer, to stop you disappearing under it. But I think that the general consensus is to educate drivers into being intelligent enough not to run into the back of them. Afterall a car will stop in a much shorter distance than a truck.
Has anyone done the social science masters with the open university?
The vehicles have to have under-run protection at both ends. This is purely to stop your car disappearing under the truck. Spend less time worrying about it and stay 2 seconds away from them and you'll be OK.More Questions & Answers ...
