Why do people play chicken with 18 wheelers ?
This is an interesting question. I believe that this largely depends on the type of doctor and the setting/healthcare system of which they are a part. With the emergence of online health advice and easy access to medical references on the internet, the public is less intimidated by physicians and are more likely to seek a new physician if they are unsatisfied due to a less than friendly bed-side manner. The converse is that, as in any profession, the best physicians are going to be successful either way. People with rational minds will inevitably stay with a physician whom they believe will have a greater capacity to cure/treat their particular ailment regardless of how they feel about them personally. Prominent surgeons with low mortality rates can be as cavalier and arrogant as they please without consequence provided the system has no checks and balances prohibiting this sort of behavior. With a greater sense of professionalism being instilled in the medical community one should hope these cowboy docs would come back down to earth. Something tells me, though it will help, it will not solve the problem. More quality control surveys should be delivered by employers or a federal board and greater consequences for those who are not receiving a passing grade should be incurred.
