How do you drive safely at night?

Question:
At night, even with light on, it isn't always easy to drive safely because sometimes the road sign isn't clear, the light isn't the brightest, some cars drive with headlights off, and etc...
I could be wrong but substantial car accidents happen at night as they do during the day.
Personally, knowing all that, I try to avoid driving at night but in some occasions, I must drive.
Could anyone provide me with tips on how to drive safely at night? What should I watch out for driving at night?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Estimate the initial speed of that car assuming a level road.?

Just some thoughts from a truck driver that spends a lot of time on the road in the dark. First of all use your eyes to take advantage of any light source that reflects off the highway. You'd really be surprised how much you can see if you look beyond your headlights. Oncoming traffic even at a distance will show you what the road ahead looks like. Don't ever look directly at the headlights of an oncoming vehicle however. Look toward the edge of the road on the right instead. Same goes for reflective road signs...don't look at them anymore once you know what it says. Your eyes have to adjust too many times between reflective light and the darker roadway. The ambient light from a distant gas station will allow you to discern the road ahead believe it or not. Use your high beams all the time if no traffic is approaching. Look out to the limit of your headlights...aim high even at night. If seeing at night is a big problem then slow down some so you don't over-drive your headlights. Night driving is actually quite pleasant and I enjoy it. Not many things more pleasant than 2AM on a deserted road with the window down and the smell of fresh air invading the cab...soft music on the FM......

Especially looking down at the right hand side of the road when an oncoming car is shining its lights at you. Many roads have a painted white line on the right side near the curb or edge and it is a very helpful guide when you otherwise might get blinded by the lights of another car.

Drive with a high degree of situational awareness at all times. Know where cars are around you, particularly on multilane roads. Make sure you have an open space that you can move into if something happens and you need to make a sudden lane change due to anything.

Take a break from driving more often to relax your eyes and nerves, so you don't get tense and lose your good judgment. Walk around, stretch, get a cup of coffee. You may want to use eyedrops to refresh your eyes if you're going long distances at night.

Watch out for seriously weaving or erratic drivers, some of whom can be DUI. Don't get in front of them, but follow at a safe distance. They often randomly change their speed while driving. Report them by 911 if you have cell phone.

Is Electronic Brake Force Distribution EBD the same as Electronic Stability Control ESC?

It is not the same as day driving but not impossible as u say during the night. I drive a lot in some rural mountain roads and in these places u cant make a mistake. I read all the other answers and I'm not going to repeat them but i would like to say that if you quit from driving at night ull never get used to it. I mean used to it bcos u have to learn those tricks of finding the track how it goes by other sources of lights. Just keep the speed in those limits where u can controll and that's all.
