The green arrow gives drivers a "protected" left turn while opposing traffic is stopped by the red signal. Drivers making a left turn should only enter the intersection when the green arrow is illuminated. The yellow arrow illuminates to warn the drivers making a left turn that the red arrow is about to illuminate, the red arrow prohibiting left turns and indicating that opposing traffic is about to start moving.Yes we need them because it's my favorite color

I used to drive over the road and never saw a real need for red arrows. A solid red light should be just as good. We don't have them red arrows in Missouri to my knowledge but we do have green ones and yellow (or amber) ones. The real important thing in my opinion is that all the states have a uniform system of visual traffic controls that everyone understands.More Questions & Answers ...
