How do you safely drive a 4 x 4 vehicle on ice / sand dunes / old dirt lanes?

Originally, they had a steel band wrapped on a drum that turned with the wheel. If you wanted to stop. you would pull the lever and the band would tighten. In older machines, their used to be a Metallic disc and a brake shoe in each of the wheels. When the brake is applied, the brake shoe glides over the rotating disc and makes it to stop this makes a vehicle to stop. Now a days most of the car makers especially the Luxury car makers use Carbon brakes which is far more effective..NMNI think hydraulic brakes were used.
They used band brakesanddrum brakes, first mechanical and then hydraulic. Early vehicles had only rear brakes. Some had a drive shaft band brakes.
