Best GPS for rerouting and regular destinations?

Question:
When I move to a university in a new town I'm going to be completely lost as to how to drive everywhere. I want an affordable GPS $400-600 that can mount in my car (I have a normal 2001 Volvo, does car model matter in having GPS?)
I want one that will talk to me and reroute me somewhere if there is a car accident or road work. I also want one with preloaded maps (are those always accurate?) and NO monthly fees.
I heard Garmin is a good brand, and Tom Tom but someone told me that gets them lost...
Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

You should be able to use any GPS device in your car as long as it doesn't have a specific type of windshield that will block GPS signals. I don't think that a 2001 Volvo is one of those, but you can check them all for your specific model at the link below.

As for your needs I think a Garmin would be the best. Specifically I think the Garmin Nuvi 350. This one is in your price range and it has everything you said you need. It will give you voice prompts with specific road names coming from a preloaded map with basically every street in America. It also has over 6 million points of interests preloaded like restaurants, Govt. buildings, Businesses etc. etc. Also, you can buy a traffic receiver accessory to receive traffic jam info that it will automatically route you around. If you want more info I would suggest going to Garmin's website, also listed below.

I prefer DeLorme. It costs less than $100, but you do need a laptop computer. I have used mine since 2001 in several states and it has given me excellent directions in many large cities. I can even pinpoint exactly where an address is in suburban neighborhoods.

Going to a university? Why not add GPS to you laptop? I like Microsoft Streets & Trips with GPS. It comes with voice and a large print display for your next turn. Re-routes instantly when you hit F4. Good luck!

Love my Garmin Street Pilot. Sits on the dash, plugs into the cigarette lighter, talks, etc. I never get lost and I go coast to coast. Make sure you get the newest model to be sure you have the newest maps preloaded. You can see them and try them out in electronics stores, but usually save lots of $$ by buying online.

a lab top is a good idea but are you going to bring it with you every where you go. even to the movies it may be a bit bulky . you will be using your computer for school work .let us assume you lose it what will happen to your work. i made the wrong turn using tom tom because i was driving too fast in a local zone ,

Cats or dogs which do prefer?

save your money and just get some good maps and learn the territory. you will either break this, get it stolen or get into an accident while you are supposed to be keeping you attention on the road. all these gimmicks just make a persons life more complicated. just something else to worry about
