Lowering the national speed limit would likely have the same effect as it did the first time around:No fuel would be saved.
More people would die in highway accidents.
A huge amount of time would be wasted in transit of goods and services, causing a general economic slowing.
Also, this would heighten disregard for police and jamb courts with more inane cases while simultaneously strengthening law-enforcement, enriching lawyers, etc.

The surveillance industry would experience a boom, and tire-makers sales would plummet, but our highways would have less wear.
Within a few years the cars produced would become less interesting in both design and driver interaction.
Then, given 20 years or so, enough people would become aggravated enough to have the speed limits raised back to a reasonable level.

Speed is not unsafe, it's that people aren't capable of handling their vehicles safely at speed. Lowering the speed limit would only serve to make people late to work, increase road rage, and make everyone burn more fuel.

If speed was that dangerous, then Formula 1 drivers and Moto GP racers would be dying right & left. But the number of those racers killed in the entire history of both sports could be counted on one hand with fingers left over.

I speed. In fact, I often go well over 90MPH on my sportbike on the freeway. HOWEVER, I don't do it when traffic is heavy, the weather is bad, or the flow of cars is going much slower than I am. In short, I accept the responsibility to control my machine at speed and know when to go fast and when not to.

If you mean everywhere, no. In certain places where I live though there are bus routes on 50 MPH roads, which is a hazard not only for the children but an obstruction of traffic. It would be much better if they lowered the speed limit and made a separate road for travelers.

Try driving across Texas and never exceeding 55MPH.then make the same trip at 75. Which one do you think you'd rather do? The safety nazis will tell you that lowering speed limits saves lives but if lives are to be saved lets first start with inexperienced drivers, then drunk driving, and better training for all drivers. Once these safety issues have been addressed then we can move on to speed limits. As cars get safer and tires get better, and handling improves, and streets are made safer -- why would you want people to go slower?Is it safe to get water under the hood of your car?
That creates congestion, increases pollution, wastes time, and causes drowsiness. Oh -- it also gives cops something to do: help insurance companies raise their profits.
Solve the problem of "speeders" (really annoying when they are forced to weave around rude or unconscious slow drivers) and the problem of "not enough lanes" by enforcing "keep right except when passing."

In West Virginia where I live the speed limit is 70 mph on the Interstate and 55 mph on most rural roads (four lane rural roads are usally 65 mph)not to the speed is usually not the problem its the driver not paying attention or not keeping vehicle properly maintained or its best mechanical condition people wiil always be in a hurry so they will still speed
