Is it true that you don't HAVE to turn off your engine before filling your gas tank?

I've had sooo many people from various walks of life tell me it isn't necessary to do so. I'd still prefer to err on the side of caution and be in one piece. IS it ok to leave the engine on?

If you wish to err on the side of caution then yes please turn your engine off. All those warnings and signs are there just to confuse people, it could'nt possibly have been because gas ignited somewhere else other that the motor. Be safe,and don't let other people's stupidity keep you from doing the right thing.

It is not only unsafe but plain stupid to leave a vehicle running while dumping 10-20 gallons of a flammable mixture..It is also a federal law that says turn off your motor while fueling up.Did you know that the static charge from a woman in panty hose sliding across her seat and touching the nozzle of gas pump while it is filling, is enough to catch it on fire..
