Question:
The warning light goes out after a few seconds, and more than one mechanic has told me that's a sure sign everythings OK, but is it really? The repairs on the car are so shoddy I wonder if they found a way to fool the the entire airbag system. It's an 02 CIvic that I've had less than a year.

does my car have an immobilizer?
Sounds like they'll work fine to me. The light coming on and going off is just a light test. If there is a problem with the airbag system, the light will stay on constantly. Stop worrying!if the light doesn't light up and then go off when you start the car, then you have issues. the light is being lit cause the computer is checking the air bag system to make sure all is okay.
Are trucks on the freeway responsible for broken windshields?
air bag sensors are in and behind the bumpers...not the fenders....so replacing fenders has nothing to do with air bags.
I agree with Petmitsu. If there was a problem the light would stay on or flash a code letting you know of a problem.
The fenders shouldn't have anything to do with the airbag sensors.
KIA Sportage - I don't know how to use the 4WD...?
Most often airbag systems can have sensors in the front and rear bumpers as well as a global Inertia Measurement Unit, where once the car passes a certain decelleration theshold the airbags will deploy.
Vandalism--Help! What can i do to catch these creeps!?
Don't worry, the lighting up of it is alright and I've noticed similar on every car. It turns it on to show that it's ensuring that the system is intact and turns it off after it has determined that it is.
