it depends on the car,some are split system front and rear and if one line goes you have either front or rear brakes,other cars are split left front/right rear and right front/ left rear.if one line goes you have opposite corners still workin,in either system you will have a low pedal and extended stopping distance

Brake master cylinders since the MID 1900'S required by law have 2 separate reservoir and hydraulic chambers separating the front from the rear braking systems. If any part of the braking systems leaks it will only affect one side of the dual system (front or back brakes) Allowing you to slow and stop the vehicle with reduced efficiency.
