I don't use my brights if i see a car in front of me(ie we're on the same side of the road and i'm behind them) and its common sense to not use them while passing...(one on each side of the road). but for some reason people love to use them no matter what. i have to re-adjust my mirrors so i'm not blinded by the people behind me.
does it matter if you put extra load tyres on a normal car?
so how far away is it proper to use them?

Okay its off 200ft when incoming vehicles come and off about like 300ft when theres a car infront of you and you turn them off and on 2 times (i do) when you see a cop to warn the other people coming or going towards it! ok! at all times its on unless your in the city or highway.

You should dim your lights when a car from the opposite side is less than 300' away.When behind another car you should dim your lights, also in that position, you can see farther ahead because of his lights.
usually when you can see an on-coming car they can see your bright lights,so always dim mine out of courtesy to keep from blinding them,and usually they,ll do the same thing back,,good luck,i hope this help,s.,have a good x-mas.

welp sounds like you already know how to use them and you can't make other people use them right. i agree that a lot of folks wait too long or don't turn them off at all; i try to give them the benefit of the doubt and think maybe they forgot. also, if the other vehicle is a different height than yours it can seem like the lights are brighter than they are; also there are new brighter lights on cars now than there used to be. i always switch my brights off as soon as i see another car coming or as soon as my headlights would be in someone's rearview mirror.when its pitch black outside and no one is around you. but when you get like 100 feet away from a car you turn your brights off till you pass them. its comon curtesy. oh and it doesn't matter if the car is coming toward you or driving the same way as you as long as your over 100 feet away from them you can have your brights on
