First off, let's start avoiding this situation all together. Buy four good snow tires or atleast all season rated for M+S, drive slowly in the winter, and avoid driving on roads that aren't kept up. If possible don't drive when it is nasty out and wait for the roads to be cleared. To answer your question though, do not hit the brakes because that will increase the skid. Let off on the gas pedal. If your car starts to spin turn the wheel to drive the car out of the spin. If you are spinning left, turn the wheel right. You will most likely start spinning the other way due to over correcting during the initial spin so get ready to turn the wheel back the other way. This might take a few times before you regain control depending on your speed. If you are really worried about this, the best thing to do is to be comfortable controlling your vehicle in these situations. Try practicing in an icy parking lot that is clear of other vehicles and objects. Drive at different speeds hitting the brakes while turning or making sudden turns to see if you go into a skid.
