Vehicular Accidents...?

Question:
Can they change one's perception and outlook? I had one 5 years ago which put me in the hospital for 5 days. Apparently, I had a mild contusion (sp?). But, I had no fractures. A lot of my friends have told me that I've "changed," but not for the better. They think I've gotten crabbier and moodier. They think that since I had a near death experience, I should have been nicer? Can it be a direct result of that?
