Your main braking system is hydraulic - it pushes fluid to operate the brakes on all 4 wheels. The hand brake is mechanical - it uses a cable to operate usually only the back brakes. So if your your brakes fail due to a hydraulic problem (the most likely problem, but still VERY unlikely) the hand brake will still work.
