Occasionally I will be driving and the streetlight that I pass will turn off. This is especially true on one particular patch of highway. My boyfriend thinks it might be to save power. Why does it happen?

It's not a light sensor issue, because not all of the lamps along the street have light sensors. Rather, a few lamps have light sensors, and when one is activated, it will turn on/turn off a series of lamps, not just one.

It's coincidence. The ballast is going bad on the light. If you were to stay there & watch them you'd notice they go off & on every few minutes.
