If you stepped off the curb without looking to the left first, you wouldn't have time to jump ouy of the way but you would with the cars in the far lane, comming from the right.

you look left first because that is the direction that traffic would be coming from (generally) you look right to check the opposite lane, then you look left again to see if there is a vehicle that has entered the lane since you last looked.
