If you have a car that is standard can you turn it into an automatic?

My friend is wondering because he is tired if a standard. If this is even possible, does anyone know how much it would cost??

depends on the car to be honest. if we knew the year make and model we could help alot more. some of the newer vehicles the transmission has some computor sensors and can be computor controlled and if this is the case you couldnt do it right or the expense wouldnt be worth it.

In order to do so, you will need to change the transmission, take out the clutch and shifter, reprogram the computer, and thats just the tip of the iceburg. It would run you at least 4 grand for a rough job, if you are really bent on getting an auto just sell the standard.

It's a mighty pain. Swapping just the tranny you'd run into so many incompatabilities and issues. It'd be easier to swap the whole powertrain (engine, tranny, smog controls, computer, harnesses, driveshafts, yadayada) from a same-year wreck. Swap the radiator too, for the tranny cooler lines. And the pedals. And the shifter. And the dash harnesses if need be. It's endless.

Who is in the wrong at a stop sign. Both?

No one would take on a job like that for pay because of the pitfalls. It would have to be a labor of love. Projects like that have a funny way of never getting finished.

You can make that conversion but it is nearly impossible and requires alot of work. Youre better off selling the car and buying another.
