In my experience it does happen a lot. People will lie to cover their own butts. The insurance companies will encourage them to do so though. The insurance company does not want to pay out more than they have to, and will even send their customers literature instructing them to never admit fault. All the time! I work for a PI attorney and we get people with the same story almost everyday. As long as you have a police report, though, you'll be fine. See, police typically intimidate people - so those at fault don't have enough time or confidence to make up a story, and usually will tell the truth at the accident site. However, once they leave the accident, they realize that they are about to be slammed by the insurance company. So they make up a story before talking with their insurance company. That is why personal injury attorneys make so much money off car accidents.
