But this only works when one is driving on the freeway, or on roads where we can travel at least a mile or two, before coming to a controlled intersection.Overdrive saves the most gas when driving for long periods at steady speeds, think of a human running at a steady speed.. not exerting themselves. Making alot of stops or driving below 40mph in overdrive, causes the transmission to shift back and forth too many times.. this causes the engine's rpm to speed up and slow down too many times. Think of that same runner speeding up and slowing down many times over... this will waste fuel and energy. Driving over steep mountains in overdrive, puts too much strain/torque on the engine.. this wastes fuel also. Drivers should listen carefully to the sound of their engine, if it doesn't sound like it's running too high or too low, then you know it's in the right gear and you're getting the best gas mileage.
