To turn left? You mean a street, BEFORE the railroad crossing? Well, if you turn left before the RR signal onto a road then thats ok.why is it that a firetruck,ambulance and police cars can go fast on ice, and not slide?

I don't know that it's legal to run a red light anywhere. Now if it's socially accepted in your area is another thing. Normally, if the opposite side of the intersection is blocked by a moving train, the traffic signals will still operate for all other sides.I don't know what area you live in, but in San Diego, when a train is running across one street, the cross traffic will still get a green light and the left-turn signal will still operate for those across the intersection from the tracks.
So as to the legality,... if the light is red, no it's not legal. You are only allowed to make a right turn on red, and that is not even legal in every area. Just check with your local laws.
