Question:
A couple of sources say to put chains on only the front tires of my Forester (incl. the manual,) but I've also been told that I'm supposed to put chains pn all 4 wheels, otherwise I'll mess up the transmission when the back wheels slip while the front ones are gripping the ground. Does anybody have any recomendations?
I have a pair of chains. Would Caltrans say I have half the number of chains I should at thier checkpoints? A pair is all I needed with front wheel drive.
I'm considering all terain tires.
Drive safe everybody.

Believe the owner's manual.Following gossip over the manufacturer's directions isn't the way to go.
For many decades almost all vehicles have been made so that one or more of the wheels can turn more than the others without harming the car. Your Subaru included.

Get mud and snow (all terrain) tires or at least snow tires.
The only time you should use chains is when you are going to be driving slowly in deep snow.
http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/ is the best resource for your question. I think you need four chains, but the folks at USMB know how those transmissions work and what you can do.
