When you exit the car and reach for the pump handle, you can discharge static elctricity in the gas fumes.

The beleif that cellphones make a static discharge is an old wives tale(as proven on mythbusters). First off, I wish everyone would stop putting so much stock into "Myth Busters", these are two knuckle heads that do not conduct experiments properly, it's always done out of a car trunk or garage (HARDLY SCIENTIFIC PROOF OF ANYTHING), it is merely a show that replaced another sh-tty show "Junk Yard wars", a Cell phone has a ringer on it, a speaker, speakers make sparks when they work, you do not want any sparks around you while re-fueling with something as volatile as Gasoline !theres a risk of a static charge and theres a risk of fire and gas is not good
