The standard driving test is at a very low level and does not adequately assess driving ability.

Turning left at stop traffic, turn right on pull out lane, the car turning left crashes, whose fault.?

It was designed only to prevent obviously dangerous or unsafe drivers from driving unaccompanied. In other words it simply lets people with a minimum safety level go out unaccompanied to learn to drive. It doesn't even do that properly.

Your idea of another, advanced or graded test with benefits in terms of insurance is excellent but the authorities responsible and the government are simply not interested. They are still floundering in the dark ages as far as driving is concerned. They have other agendas. As we know governments are not interested in good government and are largely driven by selfish motives and the influence of monied interests.

Insurance companies used to offer cheaper insurance for those who had passed their advanced test but this has largely fallen out of practice now.

So then what do I get if I got a perfect score on my driving test the first time? Free insurance? You don't pay higher insurance rates based on the score you get on a driving test. I believe that there should be "good driver" discounts, but those do exist.

does street racing kill.?

I think it's a good idea - I think we would all be very surprised that alot of our bad habits picked up over the years could mean an experienced driver fails - it's a good incentive to get cheaper insurance - and in any event just means that you are a safer driver - a bit like doing the advanced defensive driving course. I especially think that we should be tough on re-tests for people who are banned for drink driving or reckless driving.

Are they trying to frighten us.?

You can do that already. You can do a course for higher drivers (similar to the one Driving Instructors take) and that lowers your insurance payments.

Are u-turns legal in front of a school in TX?

You can't go by a supervised test where the person taking the test is on best behavior. Some insurance companies already reward people with a premium reduction for each year without an accident. What there should be is a much stiffer rate for each accident, and by stiffer I mean like this: if the premium was $1,000, for example, one at-fault accident with damages under $1,000 would get a $1000 increase in premium; over $1,000 then a $2,000 increase. For a second accident within 5 years then an additional $5,000 increase. Accidents sould also carry mandatory jail time, depending on severity anywhere from 6 months to 10 years. If a fatality is involved then madatory death penalty. Laws are MUCH too lenient on bad drivers.

Why is it that when approaching road construction the lane closing seems to go faster?

Older drivers have more experience but I do think people 70-75 should have to resit as they are not so quick to react in an emergency.

Red turn signal lights on "American" cars?

Alternatively I feel the advanced driving test should be more freely available. This obviously lowers your insurance premiums and provides people the skills to be able to avoid most collisions. furthermore people that have taken it have learnt properly what a car can and can't do and the results of making a mistake. Therefore they tend to be more calm drivers too. Many of our problems on the road today are caused by bad driving, not the easy-to-blame speed and drink. Therefore it stands to reason that by improving peoples abilities we will give them the ability to anticipate what may happen when approaching each and every obstacle, and should a surprise be lurking for them they won't just put the brakes on, but will know what they need to do to avoid a collision and have the skills to do it.

How do you get the ice off your car w/o scraper?

Just one thought they train you to pass a driving test but not to drive,That comes after you pass your test its called experience and insurance wise no claim bonus. So im afraid its already been thought of.But I do agree with others here that as you approach your old age there should be some form of fitness to drive test, also six months after you pass your test you should have to take an improvement test to see if you have improved your driving since passing your test(on a no fail basis).
