Question:
I live in Northern Ca and I'm driving to Southern Colorado for the holidays. I was wondering what to bring in case of an emergency. I have a road side kit you buy at Costco, it has flares, jumpercables, tire hole sealer, flashlight, etc, all the basic stuff. I already keep a gallon of water in the back just in case but is that enough? What about a blanket or some energy bars? I have a reliable truck but this is the first time I've made the drive out there myself in the winter. so any advice on what to bring?

go to your local walmart and purchase battery powered jumper cables. They cost about 40 dollars and you won't be stranded if you need a jump. They have saved me in a bind several times. You can charge them at home by just plugging them into your regular house electric to get it fully charged and it will hold it's charge for some time( months) if it goes un used. Also, Make sure your donut tire TRULY fits your truck. I purchased a mini van and had a flat and the donut that came with my van, wasn't the correct lug nut pattern. 4 hours in cold weather isn't nice.
Id say is, the road side kit, a cell phone, make sure the truck is in proper conditions to drive in snowy conditions(such as making sure the 4 wheel drive works fine)

is the child booster seat that came in my volvo xc90 safe for a 3.5 yr old?
The best thing would be to have adult company in case something unexpected happens. But in all cases let somebody/family know which roads you take and share your schedule so if you don't arrive to your destination in time somebody will call for help. Take care of your car so that everything, like heating system works and you have chains / and you know how to install them! Shovel is very important if you get stuck as well as warm clothing and flashlight. If something happens, don't panic! Take your time to think what to do and how to get help. Don't run for help. Don't trust too much to technology. You have cellphone, gps, but take a real old-fashioned printed map with you too, if you don't use main roads. Reschedule if storm is coming. Good luck and have safe trip!

always a good idea to armed with a firearm. only if you have been instructed as to how and are comfortable with using it. know the transportation laws for guns. in ca.a gun can not be loaded while the vehicle is moving period.keep gun in locked glove compartment. keep ammo in back seat . console or trunk. if you become stranded don't forget to load. the Sierras have many big animals. that will eat you. and plenty of 2 legged snakes to watch out for as well. be safe. learn how to protect yourself.....E

How important is it to have ABS? Should it be a deal breaker?
I would definitely bring a few blankets, and some extra clothes, make sure you have at least 3 days of food(extra) so if anything does happen you wont starve. Its good that you have a gallon of water too, I would bring a few water bottles, just in case. The emergency car kit is good. Make sure you have an extra car battery, only because if you get too cold and are stuck you can leave your car on for a bit to warm up, BUT eventually the battery will die, so an extra one is good. bring pillows, and snacks, so that way you are comfortable, and (the snacks) so you don't eat all of your food because you are just wanting to nibble on something. other than that You would be prepared for anything. Just make sure you keep the receipt for the battery if you get one, because you can always take it back after the trip. Also remember, its better to be safe than sorry, and be prepared for ANYTHING and EVERYTHING, it doesn't hurt to carry extras of things. and don't panic if you do get into trouble. make sure you have a good reliable cell phone, and a charger, make sure the battery is always charged. :) good luck and HAVE FUN! :)Would their be safer drivers if they replaced the airbag with a dagger?
oh yeah, if you already don't have it, you may want to get studded tires, or chains in case of the snow and Ice. and EXTRA batteries, you can NEVER have too many of those! and like mentioned above, an extra tank that has gas in it would be good too.
Being I have made that trip thru the mountains.I would suggest taking water along ,flashlight extra cloths and blankets, and if you own a cell phone take it and make sure it remains charged, also several candles will help keep you warm if you lose power.lights are also helpful if you get to the point to make a fire.
Just dont burn anything that you cant put out.
