As a former greyhound passenger & a driver on the road everyday I've seen cars,trucks & busses that clearly DONT have a safe amount of tire tread. When u cant make out a tread pattern & the tire is completely bald these vehicles need MAJOR service. And it DOES NOT stop just at the tire. Folks that dont take care of their tires usually take very poor care of the mechanical portions of their vehicles also!

Are you asking state requirements?? If so California requires 4/32. The best way in which i was trained also put a penny in tread and if you see Abe from neck up you are just fine.

It varies state to state and rear to front. A 100 point safety pre- check is required before starting a run.

Front tires should be a minimum of 4/32 and rear tires should be a minimum 2/32.. The measurements should be made at a wear bar in the tread or the lowest tread area. These are absolute minimums and do not mean the tires are still safe. I would sugest not going below 6/32 because of the reduction in traction and the possibility of hydroplaning. Why take a chance to save a couple of bucks or endanger someones life.
