No. I do the same as you. Its called "lane positioning" and the idea is to have a buffer space on all sides of you.

I only drive side-by-side with other vehicles when passing them, and I do so as quickly as possible. I prefer to have a lot of space on all sides of my car; this increases the amount of time I have to react to the actions of other drivers. Also, I'm sure that if someone did a study that correlated the distance between two vehicles and the likelihood of an accident occurring between them, the correlation would increase as distance decreased.
In Pennsylvania (my home state), it is illegal to ride in the left-hand lane except when passing. I'm sure this is the case in many other states, too.
