Where is the safest location in your vehicle to put a child's car seat? No 'back seat' answers.?

They tell you to look in your car's manual, but my car is in the early 90's and it just says 'back seat'

I just meant passenger side, driver's side, or middle.
Which have you been told, or think is the safest/
