Question:
The first time I heard this term was way, maybe a decade ago on National news when these shootings on Los Angeles highways became common for a while. If I remember it was portrayed that the "rage" part was of people getting upset by real or unreal slights on the highway and acting out in a violent manner. Not saying thats the correct def but that was where I first heard the term and it always stuck in my mind as that. However reading about it recently it seems the definition of the "rage" is applied not to the person who responds but to the person who "does" the slight, as in rage being aggressive driving, in cutting off, tailgating etc. I gues both definitions could make sense. So just for my clarity I was wondering, what exactly is road rage?

to me, road rage is extreme , extreme anger which while triggered by an event or other person is never proportionate to the "offence". It is insanity.Road rage (also road violence) is the informal name for deliberately dangerous and/or violent behaviour under the influence of heightened, violent emotion such as anger and frustration, with regard to the use of automobiles.

Road Rage by my definition means when someone cuts you off, almost runs into you or just plain drives like an idiot. It's how you react to the situation. Vulgar comments, rude hand gestures, tailing and so on.Should I get banned from driving?

I think that road rage involves both the aggressor and the reactor. It's often about critical distance, which is the narrow zone separating flight distance from attack distance. All animals, including humans, have a critical distance. If critical distance is breached by something dangerous (such as a car with its aggressive driver) and if the animal/human cannot flee, the animal/human will attack, or at least feel as though it should attack. When people are in cars, many are less likely to respect critical distance or simple courtesy rules. They would be more hesitant to violate those rules if they were face to face with someone. But our cars are extensions of ourselves and we do feel violated if another car gets into our personal or critical space, especially if the violation is purposeful and without caring. And the rage goes both ways.

How is it possible to NOT recognize the exit ramp?
Road Rage is when you feel like it's YOU the perfect driver vs two other kinds of drivers. The Morons who are keeping you from getting where you want to go and the Maniacs who are trying to get around you in a hurry. That's bound to get a fist on the dashboard or a finger flying... Trying to avoid believing you are perfect will reduce the rage and help you to calmly accept the morons and maniacs as people too. Besides, they really can't help themselves... ;)
