Always use the manufacturer's recommended pressure for years people would air down the tires in the snow to gain traction but by doing this you are increasing the surface area of the tire giving less ability to push through the snow and get traction.push your finger against you palm and them your palm against you palm see how much more pressure with your finger

No, simply use the vehicle manufacturers recommended pressure.

How can I prove that the road humps wrecked my suspension and tyres within a few months on this 30mph road?

Normally no, just use what the factory settings are. Unless you have some good off roading tires and are doing extreme driving then you may want to lower the pressure to add more grip but I take it your a basic city driver so keep it simple.

Is winter tires needed for me to cross Canada from Vancouver to Toronto?

I've been driving since I was 18. Today I'm 51 and for the last 20 years or so, I've made sure to have not less then 5 pounds less pressure then the manufacturer's recommends in each tires.
I have much more traction and is safer. It does not damages the tires either.
