I work up in the foothills. Up by North Bend. Washington state and it got slamed with snow and the temps in the low 20's is not helping. The roads are pure Ice.
Answers:
Is this a good way to protect my car?
1. If gas is not a big issue, you can lower your tires air pressure a bit to allow more tire to touch the road providing better side to side traction.Just a 4 to 8 psi decrease can help. Experiment.2. Weight helps, though your engine is in the rear which will cause more over-steer than under, you can add 50 pound weights near the front trunks tire wells.I don't know how steep the hills are where you work so i can't give you anymore info on weight placement.
3.If ice is your main issue and snow is secondary, try getting a high quality all weather(differ from all season)tire so you have a little more rubber on the road. Snow tires work to displace snow faster.Heat displaces ice, more heat is created due to more tire on the road.
4.Go into a field/parking lot and slide, try to understand your cars tendencies during slides or traction loss. I drive an RX-7 in the winter, i know. You can combat a crash by knowing how to respond. I am not saying that you should drft to work (even though i do in the winter)but knowing your vehicle is the first step, the road always changes. Drive conscious, not nervous.

Lowering tire pressure in snow has a negative effect on grip. Snow tires are narrower than a normal tire, so you can get through the snow, and down to the pavement. Lowering tire pressure will give you a larger contact patch, and you will float on the snow.I have a 94 nissan 300zx and was wondering if a newer nissan steering wheel would fit plug wise?
A wide, low profile or large tire has to "plow" a wide path through snow which causes more resistance. The narrower the tire, the easier you can get through snow.
